More Fun With Maps

This is a fun map program available at www.flightmemory.com
I have fairly high confidence in my international segments but I may have left off several domestic legs. Longest flight is from New York to Bangkok and my shortest is from Providence to Martha's Vineyard.

Boston Globe & Mount Washington
While my interview with the Boston Globe was cut dramatically, the article did generate some good press for the Mount Washington Observatory. There was a great spread on the first page of the City & Region section in today's issue. The full article can be found here.
Here's my full interview:
1. Where do you live, how old are you, and what do you do for work? What is your connection to Mount Washington?
I live in Norwalk, CT. I'm 28 years old and I run a small computer repair business. I grew up hiking Mount Washington with my father and later skiing Tuckerman Ravine with my friends in high school and college. During the winter of 2004/2005 I worked at the Observatory as an intern. I have a degree in meteorology, I love the mountain and the internship seemed like a perfect opportunity for me.
2. How long have you been an Observatory member?
I joined the Observatory in the summer of 2005 after I completed my internship.
3. How often do you look at the webcam images? What are your favorite things to see? What is the appeal of the online views for you?
Way too often. On the Mount Washington web forum I think I put down "obsessively" in a recent survey. Conservatively, five times a day, conservatively. I love just seeing what the weather is doing. Is the summit fogged in, is it snowing, or are there any interesting cloud formations around the area? With the addition of the Presidentials cam we now have a 360 degree view of the summit. Its great when the east side of the mountain is perfectly clear while the western slopes are under a thick overcast.
The webcams are great because I feel like I am back on the summit. I know exactly what's happening around the mountain. With so many different views there is always something interesting to catch online. Lenticular clouds capping over the summit, fresh snow in the ravines, or the morning alpenglow at sunrise. Just yesterday the Presidentials cam was in the clear with overcast above and a full cloud deck below. It was a truly unique view. I guess it helps checking the site so frequently.
4. What are your thoughts on the new "premium" content? What does it add to your cyber-experience of the mountain?
I love the new content. Back when I worked on the summit this was just an idea. I was glad to see it come to life. With the zooms, time-lapse movies, and ObsCasts we made the leap from silent movies to talkies. It seems like a big step. Before the premium content we had some great views of the ravines, Tuckerman and Huntington. Now with the zooms I can literally look right into the ravines. No more guessing how much snow is left in Tuck's when May rolls around. Just last weekend I could look at my computer and see lines of skiers hiking up the headwall on a beautiful sunny day. Made me wish I was there.
Mount Washington has some amazing light at sunrise and sunset. The next best thing to watching a sunrise from the summit is watching a sunrise on the new time-lapse videos. I love seeing the mountain go from pitch black to shades of pink and purple while the clouds race over the peak in the morning light. All in about 30 seconds of compressed video from the comfort of my own home.
Follow-up. How early in the day do you usually take your first peek, and is it typically to watch the sunrise video?
I'd be lying if I said it wasn't the first thing I do in the morning. Often before I eat breakfast and as soon as my computer flickers to life I like to hit all the cams and weather data on the site. I have to admit I'm picky about the sunrise videos. A perfect sunrise takes just the right amount of clouds at just the right elevations. I'm pretty well briefed on the daily weather so I know when a good sunrise is coming. I try to get to them as soon as possible, but its a little tricky with changing sunrise times and upload timing to MWO's site. Anything less than perfect gets held off until the afternoon. Foggy days, which are many tend to be a write-off as well.

Countries Visited
And again with countries. Hong Kong wasn't a choice so China was left off the map. I'll let you be the judge of that one. Going to the big countries really makes the map look better that it should. Canada and Russia are particularly effective at filling the screen.

2007.... Warmest Spring On Record
As a meteorologist and expert scientist I can already declare the spring of 2007 to be the warmest on record. Only twelve hours into the new season I can attest that some place in the world is experiencing their hottest spring ever.
Is this a direct result of human activities? Global warming caused by increased carbon dioxide levels? Are we doomed to rising sea levels, mass desertification, unrelenting hurricanes, and total chaos?
Well, probably not. Twelve hours of data certainly doesn't make a season - let alone a climatic record. But in a few days you can expect to see more news clips just like this, with few facts and much vagueness.

Seek The Peak Is Here
The website for Mount Washington's annual hike-a-thon is up and running. Check out the Seek The Peek website.
This will be my first year participating in the event that aims to rise over $50,000 for the non-profit Observatory. For those in the know it's STP7. I'm also looking forward to the pre and apost event parties.
More importantly you can contribute to my fund raising effort here.
Don't forget, all donations to the observatory are tax deductible.

Sleet
Another sleet storm has covered the region with over half a foot of ice pellets. Just like the Valentine's Day storm last month coastal Connecticut remained below freezing. While warm air moved in aloft cold air stayed put at the surface-causing a massive accumulation of sleet.
Right now there is over six inches of sleet on the ground. A modest snowstorm, but a major sleet-storm. A rare event. Its possible that the sleet on the ground contains as much as two inches of liquid water. Enough to make well over two feet of snow had it not been for the warm air aloft.
This storm left the biggest snowfall (sleet) of the season. Nearly doubling the season total, but leaving us well short of the seasonal average. While it doesn't look like much on the ground this storm will go down in history as possibly the biggest sleet storm in the region.
